POLLARDING of Lime trees in the churchyard – I am sure many of you will wonder what has happened to the Lime trees! A brief explanation – West Sussex County Council had indicated that the trees were becoming a health and safety hazard to road users. Tree surgeons were asked to look at the trees and advise. They were instructed to carry out remedial work and WSCC Highways Department were approached regarding the licence that was needed for traffic control - which regrettably they issued at very short notice – resulting in the work having to be being carried out on Wednesday 13 August. (Thanks to everyone at Coffee Break and the 11 am service for their forbearance.) I appreciate the trees look very sad indeed but – to paraphrase the RHS – “there are situations where pollarding is still appropriate… adjacent to main roads for example… the Common Lime is well known to be tolerant of pollarding.” Ann Mathias
COFFEE BREAK - Please note that Coffee Break will be closed on the 20th and the 27th August but will re-open on 3 September. Anne Langley
